Are you prepared for an emergency?

An emergency can be a power outage for a few hours, an accident, or a disaster - here are a few items to keep on hand at all times.

FOOD AND WATER
1. Bottled water to last 7 days
2. Canned food that you can heat up on a BBQ or small propane stove.
3. Manual can opener
4. Small propane/butane stove plus FUEL to last 7 days

The food in your fridge or freezer will last 48 hours before it begins to go bad - provided you DO NOT open the door. At the time of a power outage, get what you need, put it into a cooler with ice and leave the fridge alone.

PET FOOD AND WATER - if you have pets, you will need to adjust the amount of fresh water to include them.

FLASHLIGHTS and BATTERIES - enough to last 7 days.

OIL/CAMP LIGHTS with oil/batteries to last 7 days.

HEAT SOURCE - blankets, firewood and starter, matches.

LIST OF FAMILY/FRIENDS/NEIGHBOURS - keep a phone number list handy. During many emergencies, you can still use the phone, keep in touch with people, let them know where you are and how you are doing - this may be your ONLY LINK to getting help.

DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO GET TO YOU - we cannot stress this enough. You know how to get to your home/cottage - but in an emergency, we do not always function at our best. Take the time NOW to write simple accurate directions. Start at a landmark - CLOYNE HOME HARDWARE - and go from there - make sure you include every turn, every new road and your 911 number.

DURING A MEDICAL EMERGENCY - have a friend or neighbour meet the ambulance at a designated point to help them find you. An ambulance can waste precious time navigating back roads trying to find your home/cottage.

Your first aid kit should contain the basics for you and your family. If special supplies are needed, make sure you have plenty on hand and rotate the contents of your kit regularly.

Other items to consider.....
- generator and fuel
- battery powered radio/TV

KEEP CALM AND KEEP IN TOUCH WITH PEOPLE - help each other - professional help can sometimes take longer than we expect, but family, friends and neighbours are always close at hand.
